What comes first Motivation or Action?

It has been my experience that I have to be motivated to take action. This morning I heard for the first time to the contrary which felt very, very strange to me. I am determined to get to the bottom of this, and here is my research on it.

The relationship between motivation and action is a topic of ongoing debate among psychologists and researchers. While it is commonly believed that motivation plays a significant role in driving actions, the exact nature of this relationship can vary depending on individual circumstances and contexts.

In many cases, motivation does play a crucial role in initiating and sustaining action. Motivation can be seen as the inner drive or desire that energizes and directs behavior toward a particular goal or outcome. It provides the impetus to take action and can influence the level of effort and persistence put into achieving a goal.

However, it is important to note that motivation is not the sole determinant of action. People can engage in behavior without feeling particularly motivated, especially when the action is habitual or routine. External factors, such as environmental cues or social pressures, can also influence behavior independently of personal motivation.

Additionally, the relationship between motivation and action can be bidirectional. While motivation can drive action, engaging in a behavior can also influence one’s motivation. For example, taking small steps towards a goal and experiencing progress can increase motivation and further drive action.
